2017 RAID Soleil Noire The opportunity to witness a total eclipse of the sun in your neighborhood doesn't happen too often. In August 2017, the path for the total eclipse went across the Continental US. The shadow came from the Pacific through Central Oregon, going diagonally across the Continental US, before disappearing into the Atlantic. It seemed that half the population of the US tried to be in the path for the event. We went to Central Oregon to be part of this rare event. |
Learn more about the "8th Raid Australia 2016" |
2016 8th Raid Australia Raid Australia 2016 started from Alice Springs, right in the center of the continent. From Alice, the Raid headed North West into the Tanami Desert. The Tanami road is mostly a dirt road. About half way on the Tanami road, we turned north onto Buntene Highway towards Top Springs. The next stop was Katherine, on the Stuart Highway. The Raid paused here for 6 days, to give the participants time to explore the region. There is so much to see and do in the area, so the Raid Organizers left it to everybody to pick which tourist highlight they wanted to see i.e. Katherine Gorge, Litchfield National Park, Darwin, Jumping Crocodile Cruise, Kakadu National Park . After this intermission, the group joined again and went North East into Arnhem Land. This part of the country is Aboriginal land. To enter it as a white person, you need to have a permit, which we obtained for the group. |
Learn more about the "7th Raid Australia 2012" |
2012 7th Raid Australia Raid 2012 was called "The Mountain Raid" for a good reason. It started out with a roundtrip on Tasmania, where we covered the rugged west coast and the mountains. After returning to the Australian Mainland, the Raid continued to Wilsons Promontory, the southmost point of the Australian Continent. After this visit, we went into the mountains. The routes of choice were rugged fire tracks - once created for fire trucks to reach fires in the heart of the mountains, but never maintained. Rainwater washed out very deep ruts, which posed a danger to the 2CVs. In addition there were extreme climbs required. In some cases too steep for the 2CVs to climb - so group pushing action was required. Finally the group ended up heading to Byron Bay, the westmost point of the Australian Continent. |

2008 6th Raid Australia The 6th Raid in Australia "only" took part in the great Western Australian Deserts, enough for four weeks of fun and relaxing in the state of excitement. The start was from Kalgoorlie - a big mining town, about a day east of Perth. The route took us through the Great Victoria Desert, which is the largest desert in Australia. We took 4 wheel drive outback tracks to reach the "Gunbarrel Highway". After heading west on the Gunbarrel, we turned onto the Canning Stock Route, which is known for very tough conditions, in particular soft sand and dunes. |

Learn more about the "5th Raid Australia 2004" |
2004 5th Raid Australia The 5th Raid in Australia covered the southwestern part of the Australian Continent. We started between Melbourne and Adelaide in the wine-country. Appropriately, the start was from a vineyard. But don't think that the trip was a breeze, after two days we hit the red dirt. This event followed the spirit of the previous Raids. We had everything, from the hot desert to the high mountains with freezing temperatures at night. |
Learn more about the "Raid Northern Trail" |
2002 Raid Northern Trail In 2002, the USA hosted the ICCCR in Amherst Massachusetts. Traveling alone is less fun; so two Raids were put together. One from Sacramento - called "ICCCR Mad Dash", the other one from Seattle called "Raid Northern Trail". We did Raid Northern Trail. Our route went predominantly along the I90 corridor, with lots of sightseeing along the way. Somewhere we ran into the Mad Dash group. |
See "4th Raid Australia 2000" slide show |
2000 4th Raid Australia For the 4th Raid in Australia the organisers had decided for a route up to Cape York. There is only one road that leads there on land - a very rough and 4-wheel drive only - track. A challenge that was too tempting to withstand. Even as a 3 Raid Australia veteran I have to admit that this was the toughest Raid so far. The whole group had brakedowns like never before. But are we having fun yet? This is what we came for. Getting in trouble and fix the problems - this is a big part of the adventure. Experienced bush mechanics required! |
