What we do
Copper-nickel brake line

The 2CV is originally equipped with an aluminum brake line. The aluminum rusts away when it gets in contact with aggressive salt water. This is what happens in Europe all winter long. As the result the brake line disintegrates slowly. The worst spot is right under the master brake cylinder where the brake line makes the 90° corner to run parallel to the frame. This corner is protected by a piece of rubber hose. The hose allows the water to get in and then work on the aluminum. Since the rubber hose covers the brake line the destruction happens invisible. After about six years (exposed to salt water in winter) the brake line usually gets so weak that you can break it just by bending it.

When the brake line bursts the car has no brakes. Theoretically front brakes should still work since they are in a different hydraulic circuit. But the master brake cylinder can't develop hydraulic pressure once one circuit is open. This means that you suddenly loose your brakes. Believe me this is not funny.

To avoid this risk for the future we equip every 2CV we restore with a special copper-nickel brake line. This material is made to last - it will never rust! This extra for your safety is well worth the additional expenses for the expensive material.
